Govt strives for zero virus cases

(To watch the full media session with sign language interpretation, click here.)   Chief Executive Carrie Lam today said the Government’s goal of setting up restricted areas for mandatory COVID-19 testing is to achieve zero infections in the community.   Mrs Lam made the statement while responding to media enquiries ahead of this morning's Executive Council meeting.   She explained that many preventive measures have been implemented to halt further transmission of the virus in the city.   “In terms of public health, a lot of the work done is preventive. In fact, to have zero transmission, zero infection is the best ever public health achievement that could be made by every authority.   “So the purpose of doing compulsory tests and doing this restriction-testing declaration, of course, is with that objective in mind, that we want to achieve zero cases for the whole community - it is not just for one building or one district.”   Mrs Lam also pointed out that restricted areas for mandatory testing have been set up based on a number of factors and such operations will persist because they are effective.   “So we will continue to do this type of compulsory testing in order to identify any remaining silent transmission cases in the community. This is something that we’ll continue to do.   “But as I have explained, we are choosing these areas or buildings for this restriction-testing declaration based on a series of factors. It is not an ad hoc or arbitrary decision as such. The number of confirmed cases in that building or district is only one of the factors.”
